On Sunday, the cabinet office announced that Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok appointed the head of the Sudan Liberation Movement Minnawi Governor of the Darfur Region.

Speaking to reporters in Zalingei the capital of Central Darfur on Monday, Abdel Rahman Adeeb criticized Hamdok’s decision to appoint Minnawi at the head of the regional authority.

Adeeb stressed that such an appointment “requires consultations, not decisions,” according to the Assayha newspaper.

He further expected that Minnawi appointment would hamper efforts to reach a peace agreement with the Sudan Liberation Movement of Abdel Wahid al-Nur.

Hamdok said Minnawi’s appointment comes in accordance with the Juba Peace Agreement. Also, the armed groups that signed the peace deal agreed to nominate him to this position.

Ibrahim Ageel Madibo, a Sudanese colonist from Darfur, wrote on Monday an article about the appointment of the regional governor saying it would increase the “tribal polarization” in the western Sudan region.

He further said the Fur, which is the dominant tribe in Darfur, reject Minnawi because they believe that Darfur is their region.
